CLCP Board Members Charlotte Anderson, Mary Edmondson and Dave Marler attended the recent CLCP retreat held at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA. Workshops focusing on recruiting volunteers, effective methods in public relations and marketing, and utilizing online resources were just a few of the sessions presented at the retreat.
Ms. Anderson, who serves as Executive Director for Literacy Volunteers Troup County, was impressed by the ideas presented in two different sessions on volunteer recruitment. “Volunteers are critical to our success at Literacy Volunteers. I came away from the presentations with some great ideas not only for increasing the number of volunteers but also strategies for retaining volunteers for our organization,” said Anderson.
At a presentation on the free website, thinkfinity.org, Ms. Edmondson learned of the depth of instructional resources available. “The sample lesson plans, tutorial exercises and practice tests available at thinkfinity.org will provide our Adult Education faculty with additional resources for their use and use by their students,” said Edmondson, Executive Director of Adult Education at West Georgia Technical College.
As a new board member, Mr. Marler attended the sessions looking for ideas from others who share his passion for literacy. “Taking advantage of the professional development resources at thinkfinity.org will provide me with the skills and knowledge I need to be a more effective board member and advocate for literacy in our community,” said Marler.
Debbie Burdette, Executive Director of Troup County CLCP, expressed her appreciation for the board members who attended the retreat and the efforts of the entire board of directors saying, “Our efforts to eradicate illiteracy would not be possible without the support of the CLCP Board of Directors. Their commitment to literacy and to the community will ensure our success.”
