Bee Bouncer Carol Cain celebrates with The Doctors following their win Dr Jim Brennan, Dr. Mardi Schaufler and Dr. Tom Gore (l-r)
With an audience of more than 100 spellbound fans looking on, the team known as The Doctors prevailed over the Lifesavers from the LaGrange Pregnancy Center in the 12th annual Troup CLCP Spelling Bee to secure their 2nd championship.
Dr. Jim Brennan, Dr. Tom Gore, and Dr. Mardi Schaufler correctly spelled 3 of the 5 words included in the second-round of the spell-off. The Lifesavers team, with Sarah Andrews, Louise Coniglio, and Michelle Thomas missed on 3 words to finish in the runner-up position.
“We are grateful to the more than 25 individuals and businesses for their contributions of time, talent and financial support,” said Troup County CLCP Executive Director Debbie Burdette. “We also appreciate the 100 or so fans who came out to cheer for their favorite team.”
Sponsored by JSL Sustainers and representing Franklin Forest Elementary School, the Franklin Forest Fennetik Finnaams team of Molly Allen, Elizabeth Sullivan and Nicole Teaver won the team spirit award as voted on by the audience.
Working with volunteers and community sponsors, Troup CLCP participates in three fund-raising events during the year. Lobbin it for Literacy, a tennis tournament; Leggin it for Literacy, a 5K road race; and the Corporate/Community Spelling Bee, are each important elements of the Literacy Solution. These events raise awareness of the fight to eliminate illiteracy in the community and generate funds that are essential to providing the variety of services throughout the year.
Formulating the Literacy Solution requires three elements, Children, Adults and You, all in equal measures. The Children and Adults are in place, now we need YOU. Your time, money and talents will provide the perfect ingredients for an effective Literacy Solution. Join us as we work to eliminate illiteracy in Troup County and improve our community one life at a time.
