Mary Edmondson Memorial Scholarship
Created by Troup County Certified Literate Community Program, the Mary Edmondson Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of Mary Edmondson, who at the time of her death was the Director of Adult Education at West Georgia Technical College - LaGrange.
Beginning her career at WGTC as a secretary, Mary was determined to one day become a teacher. Even with the daily challenges of a full-time job and raising a family, Mary continuously pursued her education, eventually earning a master’s degree.
Mary was a very learned lady who viewed education as a goal or target as much as she viewed it as a process. She loved knowledge and was incredibly proud of her education, not necessarily because of the accomplishment itself but because she understood the intrinsic effort and gains that come with education.
She enjoyed the process of learning, the thrill of intellectual conversation and the satisfaction of discovery. Mary relished sharing that love of learning with others and it was this willingness to share for which Mary is most fondly remembered.
Others sought her help when it came to education. Even as Mary’s responsibilities increased and, tragically her battle with cancer intensified, she was always willing to help others whether it was reading over the essay of a co-worker’s son or daughter, or taking time to review material with a former student.
Awarded annually, the Mary Edmondson Memorial Scholarship is presented to a student enrolled in the Adult Education program at West Georgia Technical College - LaGrange. The student, having completed all preparatory work and deemed ready to take the GED exam, must be recommended by an Adult Education instructor. The successful candidate will also exemplify many of the same traits such as perseverance, commitment, cooperation and a true passion for learning, that Mary will always be remembered for.
